Byron served as a regional leader of Italy's revolutionary organization the Carbonari in its struggle against Austria. He is regarded as one of the greatest European poets and remains widely read and influential, both in the Englishspeaking world and beyond. Amongst Byron's best-known works are the brief poems She Walks in Beauty, and So We'll Go no More a-Roving, and the narrative poems Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812-1818) and Don Juan (1819-1824), although the latter remained incomplete on his death. George Gordon Byron, later Noel, 6th Baron Byron FRS (1788-1824) was an English poet and a leading figure in Romanticism. ![]() ![]() ![]() Bet Me is on a lot of lists of best Romantic Comedies written, and it fully deserves, 15 years later, to be considered a "classic" in the field. The trajectory of the romance got a little stalled in the middle, but there were enough laughs and subplots to keep it interesting and entertaining. I loved the way they stood up for each other and championed each other in the face of their emotional abuse. The conflict with their semi-horrible and horrible parents added tension and emotional involvement. It added a lot of depth to the characterizations. The hero and heroine were both very likable, with a lot of baggage that made them the way they were. ![]() I thought I had tried Bet Me before, but on this reading, nothing rang a bell! It was so good, I know I would remember it. I think I got off her when she started writing with another author. I do remember really liking Jennifer Crusie years ago, especially Welcome to Temptation. I definitely will be revisiting this talented author again soon. ***Review is for Bet Me***Enjoyed this very much. ![]() If you wanted a thin daughter, you should not have married a man whose female ancestors carried cows home from the pasture.” “Look, Mother, I am never going to be thin. ![]() ![]() ![]() For example, "F", explains Cutler, is a "chief of staff at one of the government agencies appointed by Bush". When I returned to the office, I heard that my boss was asking about my whereabouts. Like Kyd himself, little is known about his work however, a handful of plays have been positively attributed to him, including The Spanish Tragedy, which was initially published anonymously. In the 1580s, Kyd found fame as a respected playwright whose talent rivaled that of William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe. It is not known if Kyd ever attended university, but there is evidence to suggest that he worked as a scrivener for a short time. In the late 1560s, Kyd enrolled in the Merchant Taylors’ School, a new private boys’ school in London that opened in 1561 and is still in operation today. Little is known about Kyd’s life, but his father was a successful scrivener, so it is likely the Kyds were a comfortable middle-class family. ![]() Thomas Kyd was born in 1558 to Francis and Anna Kyd. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is also superbly read by Tony Britton. ![]() ![]() It is full of characters with whom it is easy to empathise, a dash of real nastiness in the chief 'baddie' - and it also contains one of the best descriptions of a horse race that one could ever wish to hear. As it happens, however, "Nerve" IS about jockeys and horse racing - but (as always with Francis) it is a riveting story which anybody will enjoy. Some people think you have to be interested in horses and racing to enjoy his books: this is simply a misconception for, while they often have racing and racing people as part of the background, they are not always part of the main plot. As an English teacher, I always used to recommend students to look at Dick Francis' style: never a word wasted, the story always driven on, the description clear, the characters engaging, the tension always maintained. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Foucault examined the pre 18th-century situation – a time when public execution and corporal punishments were the primary forms of punishment.
